In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, the integration of digital tools into classroom settings has revolutionized the way students learn and interact. However, amidst the convenience and efficiency that technology brings, there's an increasing need to nurture the sense of belonging among students—a fundamental component of a thriving educational environment. Building a classroom community where every student feels valued and connected requires a delicate balance between digital engagement and personal interaction.

In our recent webinar with Modern Classroom Project, Shaun Conway and Matthew Hickson explored how educators can harness the power of technology to enhance learning while fostering an inclusive atmosphere that prioritizes personal connections. We'll delve into strategies for using digital tools not only as a means of delivering content but also as a way of bridging gaps between students' diverse experiences and backgrounds. By examining the intersection of technology and human connection, we'll uncover ways to create a classroom environment where every student feels seen, heard, and supported.

Bridging Communication Gaps in Schools

Shaun and Matt engaged in a thoughtful discussion about the challenges families encounter when trying to access digital communication, as well as strategies to bridge these gaps to ensure full participation. Matt emphasized the necessity of adopting a hybrid communication model that combines digital tools with in-person interactions to meet people where they are. He pointed out the importance of fostering two-way communication to build trust and a sense of belonging within the school community. Shaun concurred, underscoring the significance of balancing digital and face-to-face communication and highlighting the effectiveness of video as a communication tool. They also explored the potential drawbacks of overly relying on a single communication method and stressed the importance of blending various approaches to accommodate diverse needs and preferences.

Consistency in Communication Builds Trust

They also delved into the critical role of consistency in communication within school communities. Matt stressed that maintaining a regular and predictable communication schedule is key to building trust with families, enabling the effective sharing of both positive and negative information. He also underscored the importance of consistency across various communication channels, including emails, staff calls, and social media posts. Shaun agreed, citing a personal example of how his child's teacher's consistent communication has been instrumental in fostering trust. Together, they highlighted the necessity of proactive planning and setting reminders to ensure that communication remains consistent and reliable.

Balancing Communication in Schools Discussed

Exploring the critical balance between digital and in-person communication in schools to effectively engage families and staff, Matt shared his experience with a school that achieved an impressive 92% response rate to a survey by employing a mix of in-person, phone, and digital communication strategies. He emphasized the importance of creating a "scoreboard" to track communication efforts and distributing leadership across teams to enhance effectiveness. Shaun agreed, noting the value of optimizing existing communication strategies without overburdening staff with additional tasks. Matt also suggested making communication enjoyable and engaging, citing examples like "Wellness Wednesday," and incorporating communication into broader school improvement initiatives. He concluded by recommending self-paced hybrid staff meetings as a model for effective communication, which can also provide staff with more flexibility and time.

Improving Accessibility in School Communication

Shaun and Matt discussed the importance of accessibility in schools, particularly for non-native English speakers and underrepresented families. They highlighted the need for effective communication tools and services, such as translation and video recording tools like Screencastify, to ensure all families can engage with the school community. Matt emphasized the importance of regularly canvassing families to understand their preferred communication methods and languages. He also suggested creating spaces where the dominant non-English language is prioritized and using data to improve communication infrastructure. Shaun added that Screencastify offers significant world language translation, transcript, and voice overlay capabilities, allowing parents to choose the language of their choice for video communication.

Building Trust and Family Engagement

Finally, they explored the significance of building trust and transparency with families, particularly in the context of school choice and family engagement. Matt stressed the importance of utilizing digital tools, such as videos and on-demand resources, to effectively engage with families. He also highlighted the need to be proactive and actively present in the community, sharing insights from his experiences in Durham. Shaun concurred, emphasizing the necessity of proactive communication and cultural responsiveness. They concluded by inviting attendees to submit any questions they might have, assuring them that they would provide responses.
